Midwood Baptist Church
what is going on at midwood?
Simply
Trusting Everyday!
In the light
of the events of the last week, I felt it timely to print this article I read
by our North American Mission Team with a few closing thoughts of my own.
The date Jan. 12, 2010. The time 5:22 pm (local time). The world
of the Haitian people was shaken into chaos.
Where there was once care-free laughter, there is now a new sound…
Eske ou ka ede nou, souple? (Can you help us, please?)
Southern Baptists are ready to help. Trained, equipped and
empowered by the Holy Spirit Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers not
only bring relief to meet basic needs but the Good News of Jesus Christ. Many
have already called ready to respond, eager to get moving.
There is still much uncertainty as to the extent of damage, death
toll and number of injured. The lines of communication are still weak, the port
is closed, the airport is being taxed beyond its limits and after three days
food and water are running out. A bad situation is getting worse with each
passing hour.
Southern
Baptist Disaster Relief staff have canceled other meetings and moved to a 7 day
work week. Two Florida Baptist Convention leaders are scheduled to arrive in
Port-au-Prince Saturday and a five member assessment team has plans to be on
the ground Monday. In partnership with Baptists in Haiti, Baptist Global
Response (BGR), the Florida Baptist Convention and other agencies
immediate-urgent needs and long-term relief planning is underway. In addition,
several State Conventions are working through long-standing relationships with
Haitian Baptists seeking ways to assist their partners in Haiti.
So many questions and so few answers at this moment! But this we
do know, the power of prayer is real and while we wait for the opportunity to
act we must find ourselves on bended knee before the Father.
So what can YOU do today?
You can
pray. Pray for the 8.5 million people
living in Haiti, nearly 3 million of them homeless. Pray for those who are
without the Hope of Jesus Christ, trapped in Voodoo and other false religions.
Pray for the over 80,000 Haitian Baptists, in more than 1,000 churches, and
their pastors as they share Jesus in the midst of their own personal crises.
Pray for direction and wisdom, open doors or opportunity and the logistics
necessary to get teams and resources into Haiti. Then pray some more.
You can give. Every
dollar donated to Southern Baptist Disaster Relief is used to provide relief
services to people and communities affected by disaster. Give to the Southern
Baptist Disaster Relief Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund today.
The FBI
issued a warning about Relief Fraud today. “The FBI today reminds Internet
users who receive appeals to donate money in the aftermath of Tuesday's
earthquake in Haiti to apply a critical eye and do their due diligence before
responding to those requests. Past tragedies and natural disasters have
prompted individuals with criminal intent to solicit contributions purportedly
for a charitable organization and/or a good cause.” Make contributions directly to known organizations to ensure
contributions are received and used for intended purposes such as our NAMB
Disaster Relief Organization.
Some can go. Disaster
relief teams are being sent from North Carolina and around the World. If you
are ever interested you can contact the State Convention for training.
At times
like these I am drawn to God’s Word of Truth…The Psalmist says in Psalms
46:1-3:
God is our refuge and strength, an
ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains
fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their
surging.
The
hymn-writer is correct, “Trusting Him whatever befall…trusting Jesus, that is
all!”
Whatever is
going on in your world…Simply Trust Jesus everyday!
I love you,
Pastor Garry

Reach Up Charlotte 2010 Youth Outreach Let
me ask everyone to start praying for what I believe will be a powerful
opportunity to train our students to pray and be witnesses for Christ as we
prepare for a special rally that will clearly present the Gospel to students
who come. It’s the Reach Up Charlotte Tour promoted by the
Baptist State Convention, the Metrolina Baptist Association, Midwood Baptist
Youth and other Churches in our Association. This opportunity connects very well with the state-wide
“Find It Here” effort to pray for and share Christ with those around us,
leading up to baptismal celebrations on Easter Sunday. The specific area we are targeting for this effort is east
Charlotte, but all of our association is invited to participate. We need your help to make sure we
connect with students in our churches who can invite and share Jesus with
friends who need to know Him. Here are the dates: Saturday, February 6, 2010, 11 am – 2 pm “How to Pray Your Friends to
Christ” Location: Midwood
Baptist Church, led by Chris Allen Saturday, February 20, 2010, 11 am – 2 pm “How to Share the Gospel” Location: First
Baptist Church, led by Merrie Johnson Saturday, March 6, 2010 – “Reach Up Rally” Doors open: 6 pm,
Rally concludes 8 pm. Location: Garinger
